Obesity in America

Obesity in America has been a major problem among the youth. It is estimated that about half of American youths between the ages of 8 years old and 16 years are obese.  And about 1/3 of these young people are extremely obese.  There are many factors that can be attributed to about half of American young being obese in one form or another.  Not only are there many obese young people in America, the obesity rate is high among many of the youth throughout the world.  China and Japan have seen a major spike in their young people from 8 years old to 16 years old being extremely obese.  Here are the major factors that have caused the increase of obesity among young people in America and throughout the world:

  • Fast food restaurants springing up all over the world (McDonald’s is the most popular one);
  • Schools cutting out extracurricular activities like gym and sports from schools in America;
  • Children spending more time in front of the TV watching shows and playing video games.

The fast food industry is making a lot of money by centering their advertising on the youngest customers (between the ages of 8 years old and 16 years old).  The fast food industry knows that by targeting young people they will get the most “bang for their buck”.  Also, parents have no trouble buying fast food for their children to eat because the food is fast and convenient.  The convenience of fast food is important to parents because of their work schedule and their daily schedule.  Also, due to major budget cuts in education nationwide, many schools in America are finding that they have to cut back on extracurricular activities like sports, gym, arts, and music.  These extracurricular activities help to keep children in shape physically and mentally.  Also, since there is lack of low cost extracurricular activities for children to do, many parents are finding it difficult to ensure that their children remain physically active.  Children spend more at least 6 hours per day in front of the TV watching shows and playing video games.  Much needs to be done in order to combat the obesity rate in America and throughout the country among young children.

In conclusion, the obesity rate in America and in other countries can be reduced only if adults are willing to take action to stop it.  One thing that can be done is telling fast food restaurants to provide healthier options on their menus.  McDonald’s and Subway are taking the stand to provide healthier options on their menus for children.  Also, the federal government and state governments are starting to realize the importance of extracurricular activities like gym and sports keep children fit and active.  The government agencies are finding other ways to make cuts in the budget without cutting money from education.  Many parents are starting to encourage their children to be more active and are doing family activities that keep the whole family active.
