Useful Guidelines To Follow When Writing An Introductory Paragraph

When writing your introductory paragraph try to follow these useful guidelines:

  • Watch your length
  • Ask questions
  • Make sure your objectives are clear
  • Include thesis statement

Watch your length

An introductory paragraph does not have to be very long. The minimum length for a paragraph is three sentences; given that this is an introductory paragraph for a paper you should have at least five to seven sentences in your introduction. The reason for this is that as it is introducing your paper you will need to say a bit more than three sentences can hold, but neither do you want to take up too much room on just the introduction.

Ask questions

Asking questions can get the reader’s mind going to seeking the answers to what you are asking. By asking questions in your introduction you can reveal, in a roundabout way, to the reader how your paper is going to go. These questions can be your objectives, as finding the answers to what you are asking is something you will be doing in your paper.

Make sure your objectives are clear

Your reader will not know what you are setting out to do if your objectives are unclear. A paper has usually three objectives in which to explore throughout your paper, you should keep the objectives to a minimum and not overload your plate with too much work to be done. You need to clearly state what your objectives are so that the reader will know keep aware for them when reading your paper and see if you really do follow through in your endeavors.

Include a thesis statement

Even though you may be writing a short paper it should include a thesis statement because that sums up what your essay is. A thesis statement is not just for a thesis but can be used in every kind of paper as a statement on what your paper is about. A thesis statement is a statement that you are making based on what you believe to be true. It can be at the beginning of your introductory paragraph or at the end, and it is a short statement, as it is not meant to be very long. With a thesis statement you can quite clearly state what your paper is about, for example when someone reads: Othello was a great general but a poor husband, they know that the paper will be about Othello’s military skills and his bad behavior as a husband.
